The Tooro KingdomKyarusozi lies in the rural outskirts of the Toro Kingdom, which is one of the ancient, traditional kingdoms of Uganda that has long received international acknowledgement, even when Uganda was under British colonial rule. Although the kingdoms of Uganda had their power disbanded under the rule of Milton Obote in the late 1960s, kings remain in each of the regions as symbolic representatives and still manage to peacefully coexist with the current Republic. The language of area is named after its kingdom and is called Rutooro.

"One thing never changed no matter where I went in Uganda; the red earth. It was everywhere from covering the narrow dirt roads that our pick-up truck would chug down to speckling the sides of the one room huts that enormous families would share together to staining my feet which still may be a bit darkened with the rusty hue. But that deep, fertile richness that dotted everything in sight was the same deep, fertile richness that embodied what life and culture is in Uganda. Hospitality is not optional and spirituality is a given. Community is family and time is a different concept"
